Why We Went All-In on AI-Native Growth (And What It Means)
Cursor hit $100 million in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) with 30 employees. One year. Thirty people.
That same milestone historically required 500+ employees and five years. The gap is not because Cursor had a better sales team or spent more on paid acquisition. It is because they built differently from the first line of code. AI was not a feature they added. It was the load-bearing wall. That is AI-native growth in its most visible form.
That contrast drove the decision at Momentum Nexus. When I was designing what kind of growth studio to build, I kept coming back to one question: if AI-native companies operate at 6-12x efficiency compared to traditional SaaS, what does that mean for a studio serving them? The answer was uncomfortable. Any studio that wasn’t itself built on AI-native growth principles would end up being a liability, not a partner. It would be the bottleneck.
This is not a post about why you should “use more AI.” I covered the failure patterns in why most SaaS teams use AI wrong. This is about a specific strategic commitment: what we changed, what we gave up, what we built, and why it matters for every founder in the $50K-$150K MRR range watching how the market is reshaping itself.
”AI-Native” Is Being Used Wrong

Level 2: AI-First. AI is integrated into core workflows, and removing it would significantly degrade performance. The business still functions without AI, but at notably lower output. A growth agency that uses AI-assisted research, AI-drafted copy, and AI-scored leads is AI-first. Remove the AI and they still deliver. Slower, smaller, but still.
Level 3: AI-Native. AI is the architectural foundation. Remove it, and the business cannot function at its designed capacity. The economic model, the delivery speed, and the output volume were all built assuming AI runs continuously. This is where Cursor sits. This is where we built Momentum Nexus.
The practical test I use comes from CRV’s framework: if you removed all AI access entirely, would the system degrade or stop? Degradation means AI-first. Stopping means AI-native.

The efficiency numbers in the bottom row are not projections. They are current measurements. AI-native SaaS companies already operate at 6-12x the efficiency of traditional SaaS companies and grow at 3x the rate. That gap compounds. Every quarter spent building in the AI-enabled zone, you are not just growing slower. You are falling further behind on the economic model that will define the next five years of B2B SaaS.
Why We Made the Bet
When I started designing Momentum Nexus, I had a clear choice that every growth studio founder faces right now: build an agency model with AI tools layered in, or rebuild the entire operating model around AI as the foundation.
The honest version of why I chose the second path is that when I did the math, the first option scared me more.
A traditional growth studio sells human hours. You hire researchers, strategists, writers, analysts. Output scales linearly with headcount. If you want to serve twice as many clients, you hire twice as many people. That model hits a ceiling early for founder-led studios. Margins compress as you grow because every new client adds salary cost before it adds revenue. Three signals in 2024 made this feel urgent rather than optional.
Signal one: the early data was showing up in revenue. Early-stage AI-native businesses saw a 93% increase in revenue growth in 2024 versus the prior year. AI-enabled businesses saw incremental gains. The structural advantage was not theoretical. It was already in the numbers.
Signal two: the adoption window was narrow. Fewer than 5% of enterprise applications had task-specific AI agents in 2025. Gartner projects that reaches 40% by end of 2026. That is not a slow drift. That is a compressed transition. Waiting to see how the market settled was not strategic patience. It was a choice to enter late.
Signal three: clients were asking for different things. The founders I was talking to in the $50K-$150K Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR) range were not asking for more marketing services. They wanted systems. They were frustrated by agencies that delivered deliverables on schedule but left no infrastructure behind. They wanted growth engines, not campaigns. The last row is where the unit economics separate. At 2-3 clients per strategist, you need premium pricing to cover salary and still generate margin. Question 1: If you lost all AI tool access tomorrow, how long could you deliver at current output levels?
More than a week without meaningful degradation: AI-enabled. A few days before output drops significantly: AI-first. Hours before operations cannot function at designed scale: AI-native.
Question 2: Is your current output volume calibrated to what humans alone could produce, or what AI-augmented systems produce?
If you could maintain the same output with two-thirds of your team tomorrow, you are not AI-native. AI-native means the volume you deliver was never achievable without AI, even if you doubled the human team.
Question 3: Do your AI systems improve without manual intervention?
AI-enabled tools do not learn from your specific usage. AI-first systems improve through prompting and tuning. AI-native systems have feedback loops: output quality feeds back into workflow design, agent memory improves context retention, and routing logic adapts to performance data. If your AI does not get better over time, it is a feature, not infrastructure.
Question 4: Is your economic model possible without AI?
If you could offer the same service at the same price point with a human-only team, you are AI-enabled. AI-native means the pricing, delivery speed, and coverage of what you offer only exist because AI is doing the operational layer.
Question 5: Where does human judgment sit in your system?
AI-enabled: humans do the work, AI assists occasionally. AI-first: humans direct the work, AI executes specific pieces. AI-native: humans set strategy and quality standards, AI executes continuously and alerts humans when judgment calls are needed.
Most growth teams in the $50K-$150K MRR range score AI-enabled on this diagnostic. A smaller group are genuinely AI-first. Very few are AI-native, and those that are, are growing faster than the rest of the market.

I am not arguing that every founder needs to rebuild from scratch. That is not always possible and not always right. What I am arguing is that every founder in the $50K-$150K MRR range needs a clear answer to one question: which direction are you moving? Toward AI-native, or accepting the compounding efficiency gap that widens every quarter?
The practical starting point is not a wholesale transformation. Pick the highest-leverage workflow in your growth operation and rebuild it AI-native. Not AI-assisted. Rebuild it so that removing the AI makes it stop, not slow down. Outbound research. Content production. Lead scoring. CRM enrichment. Pick one and build it properly. That one system teaches you what AI-native actually means in your operation. The model becomes repeatable from there.
